Where Wine Meets Tradecraft—And Why It Became Our Most Popular Event of 2025
When we launched Vintage Espionage, we weren't sure how people would respond to a wine tasting hosted by a former intelligence officer. Turns out, they responded by making it our most popular event.
The concept is simple: a blind tasting of carefully selected wines, guided by someone who spent years building relationships in high-stakes environments around the world. The execution is anything but ordinary.
Meet DECANTER/1
Your host for the evening is known only as DECANTER/1—or C/1 for short. For security reasons, she remains delightfully "encrypted." What we can tell you: she's a former CIA officer turned sommelier who spent her career on the front lines of intelligence operations. Now she pairs that experience with a passion for wine, and the combination is unlike anything else.
C/1 doesn't just pour and describe. She weaves each varietal into stories from a life spent overseas—tales of persuasion, relationship-building, and the delicate art of reading people. Between sips, you'll hear how the same observation skills that help assess a wine's provenance apply to vetting a potential source. You'll learn why patience matters as much in developing an asset as in letting a bold red breathe.
The Unexpected Parallels
Wine appreciation and intelligence work share more than you'd expect. Both demand acute observation: color, aroma, the subtle tells that reveal what's really in the glass—or across the table. Both require cultivating trust over time. Both reward those who pay attention to details others miss.
C/1 draws these connections throughout the evening, making the tasting feel less like a lecture and more like a conversation with someone who's seen the world from angles most of us never will. Guests leave not just knowing more about wine, but thinking differently about how we read situations and people in everyday life.
Who Shows Up
Vintage Espionage attracts a mix: wine enthusiasts curious about the spy angle, espionage buffs who appreciate a good Burgundy, couples seeking a date night that goes beyond dinner and a movie, friend groups celebrating birthdays or reunions, and corporate teams looking for sophisticated entertainment that sparks genuine conversation.
What they have in common is curiosity—and a willingness to spend an evening in the company of someone whose stories don't come from a guidebook.
Why It Works
In a city of wine bars and a culture saturated with spy fiction, Vintage Espionage offers something neither can deliver alone: authenticity wrapped in elegance. C/1's background isn't a gimmick. It's the reason the evening feels different—more intimate, more surprising, more memorable.
Guests tell us they came for the novelty and stayed for the conversation. They ask questions they'd never ask at a typical tasting. They connect with strangers over shared curiosity about a world that usually stays hidden. And yes, they discover some excellent wines along the way.
